In Toronto, a 15-year-old aspiring writer named Sarah meets a 60-year-old painter named Ashley in a cafeteria, where she's hiding from her abusive boyfriend. Ashley, who hasn't painted in years, agrees to read Sarah's poetry and they start spending time together at his studio. Sarah falls in love with Ashley, but he sees her as a muse and a platonic friend. When her boyfriend discovers them together, he attacks Sarah in a cornfield, but she's able to defend herself.
