Johnny Ryan, a bestselling author and womanizer, meets Mercy, a writer and critic, at a party celebrating his latest book. Despite their initial animosity, they develop a connection, and Johnny asks Mercy to stay in LA. However, he later becomes emotionally shut down and estranged from his father, a university professor, leaving the audience wondering about Mercy's whereabouts.
