In the 1920s, a Jewish family, the Hermans, live in a small flat in Montreal. David, a six-year-old boy, loves spending Sundays with his grandfather, collecting junk and hearing made-up stories about their Jewish culture. However, these stories cause tension between the grandfather, who is religious, and David's father, who is secular and values reality. Money and the grandfather's aging horse also become points of contention.
