Maud's was a pioneering San Francisco bar for women, established in 1966 by Ricky Streicher. It provided a safe and welcoming space for lesbians to socialize, free from the dangers of police raids that plagued gay bars in the 1950s. The bar thrived until the late 1970s, when the assassination of Harvey Milk and the AIDS epidemic took a toll on the community. As a result, people drank less and had fewer casual relationships in the 1980s, ultimately leading to the closure of Maud's. Despite this, patrons remembered the bar fondly, cherishing the sense of community and acceptance it provided.
