In a 1989 Berlin, two women, Helena and Louise, navigate their relationship despite the physical barrier of the Berlin Wall. They exchange letters to stay in touch, unaware that a Stasi officer, Bernd, is reading their correspondence as a bedtime story. Bernd's assistant, Eberhardt, becomes suspicious of Bernd's intentions, but Bernd may be more perceptive than Eberhardt thinks. As the officers play cat and mouse with the women's letters, Helena and Louise plan their escape.
