In 1961, Emil starts working as an extra at Berlin's studio Babelsberg and falls for French dancer Milou, who is a body double for a famous actress. Despite being clumsy and irresponsible, Emil is passionate about Milou and feels an understanding with her. Meanwhile, Milou is insecure and struggling to find her big break, living in the shadow of her more successful colleague. When the Russians restrict travel between East and West Berlin, Milou is forced to leave without saying goodbye to Emil. He responds by creating a fake socialist film to bring her back to East Berlin, leading to a series of challenges and tragedies.
