Four friends, Craig, Peter, Ingrid, and Joanie, embark on a relaxing wilderness camping trip, unaware that a deranged backwoodsman is terrorizing tourists in the woods. As they hike, they encounter various individuals, including fat women, nerdy bird-watchers, and young couples, who meet gruesome ends. Despite witnessing a man and his wife being thrown off a cliff, the friends continue their journey, entering a dense and dark forest where they become lost. Suddenly, a large figure emerges with a machete, killing Craig and sending the others fleeing in terror. The rest of the day and night is spent running and hiding from the maniac, while the local sheriff and deputy investigate the disappearances.
