Emma Reynolds, a junior partner at a New York City law firm, returns to her hometown of Oliver's Well, Virginia for Christmas after her parents' passing. She's accompanied by her siblings, Andie and Daniel, to close up their family's historic house and decide what to do with their parents' belongings. Emma's also hiding a secret - her recent breakup with her boyfriend, Ian. While going through their parents' belongings, Emma and her siblings hire Morgan Shelby, an antiques dealer, to appraise their items. As they dig through their parents' past, they discover hidden love letters from someone named R.J. to Emma's mother, Caroline. Emma and Morgan embark on a mission to uncover the identity of R.J. and his significance in Caroline's life, which may lead them to reevaluate their own desires and motivations.
