In a small French village in 1959, the residents follow unspoken rules, and those who don't conform are ignored. The Mayor, le Comte de Reynaud, is the moral authority, even more so than the young Catholic priest, Pere Henri. When free-spirited Vianne Rocher and her daughter move to the village, they shake things up by opening a chocolaterie, which raises the ire of le Comte. Vianne's unconventional lifestyle and relationships, including with a nomadic musician, put her at odds with the traditional values of the village.
