In the small town of New Mexico, Marshal Clay Morgan, known for his missing eye from the Civil War, takes his job very seriously. When his old friend Hank Danner arrives with his wife Helen, who used to love Morgan, the town's dynamics change. Danner is suspected of a bank robbery, and Morgan is tasked with arresting him. However, Danner's escape is orchestrated by the corrupt saloon owner Frenchy De'Vere, who later has Danner murdered. Morgan is accused of the crime, but no evidence is found and the stolen bank money remains missing. Meanwhile, a young man named Carl, who was helped by Danner when he was being bullied, becomes convinced that Morgan killed his friend and sets out to avenge him by becoming the fastest gun in town, with Morgan as his intended target.
