A talented swimmer, Lidia Yuknavitch, escapes an abusive home by accepting a college scholarship in Texas. However, she loses her scholarship due to substance abuse and moves to Oregon, where she collaborates with author Ken Kesey on a novel. Despite continued struggles with addiction and promiscuity, Lidia finds solace and eventually builds a fulfilling life as a writer, teacher, and loving mother.
