In 1932, a meteorite crash in Manchuria leads to the discovery of a mysterious material that produces a new kind of energy. This energy is used to power a massive submersible battleship, Ra, during World War II. A young woman named Annette tries to stop the Ra's launch, warning that the material was sent by subterranean humans to test the surface dwellers' right to live. Despite her efforts, the Ra is launched and battles the American submersible Liberty, leading to mutual destruction. Fifty years later, Annette and the Ra's first officer are the only survivors. Annette and a UN team investigate microwaves at the South Pole, which precedes an attack from below the Earth led by Avatar. The final battle to defend Earth begins as the rebuilt Ra, commanded by Annette's believed-to-be-dead father, is humanity's last line of defense.
