A young couple, Holly and Calvin, arrive in New York City to pursue their acting dreams, but they soon find the reality of high rents and rejection harsh. They take up temporary residence with Holly's eccentric aunt, who lives in a rent-controlled apartment. When her death occurs, they concoct a scheme to pretend she's still alive to keep the apartment and stay in the city. As they navigate this deception, they must evade suspicion from the building's sleazy manager and enlist the help of other quirky characters. However, their ruse takes a toll on their relationship, leading to infidelity, betrayal, and a struggle to define their identities and future as actors and New Yorkers.
