In the Bronx in 1942, Eddie Kurnitz, a widower, moves his two sons to live with his mother and aunt in Yonkers after his wife's passing. The boys struggle to adjust to their new living situation, fearing their strict grandmother and finding it hard to relate to their eccentric aunt. The family is further complicated by the arrival of Eddie's brother Louie, a gangster's henchman on the run from his boss. The boys aim to make money quickly to help their father and reunite their family, while their aunt seeks to marry her movie theater usher and open a restaurant, and Louie must evade his pursuers.
