Four years after returning from Vietnam, Jack still struggles with nightmares. On a bus to California, he meets Carol, who has just left her fiancé four days before their wedding. Jack shares his plan to start a worm farm with his Vietnam veteran friends, and Carol is initially annoyed but eventually becomes invested in his life. As his friends drop out one by one, Carol remains his last source of support, helping him to hold on to hope.
