James Whale's twilight years are the subject of this movie, which delves into the life of the renowned director behind the 1931 classic "Frankenstein".

James Whale, a retired film director, is struggling with his declining health and recent stroke. Despite his physical limitations, he still has a strong desire for romantic connections with young men. He becomes smitten with Clayton Boone, a handsome young man he hires to work in his garden. Clay, an ex-marine, is unaware of James' famous past and his homosexuality, and the two form a tentative friendship. As their bond grows, James reflects on his life, including his experiences in World War I, and begins to reveal his true motives to Clay.
