In 1939, a young Henry Blumenstein and his family fled Nazi-occupied Austria, boarding the ill-fated St. Louis with other Jewish refugees. Despite being denied entry to Cuba, they were ultimately forced to return to Europe, leaving their fate hanging in the balance.

Henry Blumenstein, a child refugee, fled Nazi-occupied Austria with his family on the St. Louis, but was refused entry by Cuba and returned to Europe. His mother placed him in hiding with a Catholic Dutch family, the Dijkstras, before she was captured and sent to Auschwitz.
