Jamie Klein, an out-of-work lesbian actor, is struggling to find roles due to her unconventional appearance. Her roommate's cat, Howard, is an actor and lands every audition he tries. Jamie decides to challenge herself and prove she can be more successful than a cat. Her friend David advises her to be herself, which for Jamie means embracing her "Butch Jamie" persona. However, this unintentionally makes her appear as a man, and she's offered a role as a male character, Steve. Despite initial reservations, Jamie accepts the role and must keep her true identity as a woman a secret. On set, she meets a flirtatious woman named Jill and begins a complicated and sexy affair.
