John Clark and his deaf friend Bootch are pursued by U.S. Marshal Lamar Bly, who mistakenly believes they're part of the Kootney Kid's gang. After a gunfight, Bly is wounded and authorizes John to take up the hunt for the Kid, who's trying to gain control of a ranch with oil. Unbeknownst to John, the Kid is actually his real identity, Everett Tarkington Clark, and has stolen a letter to fake his identity. As John is arrested for Bly's murder, he and Bootch escape to stop the Kid from killing Bly, the only one who can prove John's claim.
