Ali Sokhela, a chief of the homicide branch in Cape Town, narrowly escaped being murdered as a child during the conflict between Inkatha and the African National Congress. He now works alongside Brian Epkeen, a white officer whose family was involved in apartheid's establishment, to combat crime in sprawling areas plagued by gangs and unemployment. The duo investigates the murders of two young women, linked to a new drug in the city, amidst a society still grappling with the echoes of apartheid.
