In the Catskills of 1964, a young Russian Jewish boy named Zelimo struggles to fit in at a summer camp for Jewish boys, where he faces bullying and hardship. When his mother takes a job at a neighboring girls' camp, Zelimo decides to join her, and over the course of the summer, he undergoes a transformative coming-of-age journey. Through flashbacks, we see Zelimo's difficult childhood in Central Russia and his harrowing escape in 1959. Along the way, he finds guidance and support from Hector, a charismatic camp counselor who takes Zelimo under his wing.
