A NASA project aiming to send humans into space using nuclear rockets is expected to launch in the mid-1950s, but Dr. Ralph Harrison has serious doubts and quits in protest. He then joins forces with Prof. Nordstrom to create a robot spaceman, which sparks the interest of foreign spies. The film incorporates real documentary footage of early space exploration efforts.
