Alfred Salteena, a somewhat awkward gentleman, meets a young woman on a train and invites her to his London home. She convinces him to accompany her to high-society gatherings and events, where he struggles to fit in and impress her. Feeling inadequate, Alfred seeks the help of Lord Bernard, who suggests he attend a finishing school for gentlemen. Meanwhile, Bernard takes Ethel under his wing, leaving Alfred to wonder if he's good enough for her.
