Coach Joe Newton has led the York High School Cross Country team to 50 years of success, teaching valuable lessons like "always do your best" and "it's nice to be great but far greater to be nice". With a team of 221 athletes, Coach Newton aims to turn boys into men, and his influence extends beyond the top 5 scorers. However, when two star athletes are expelled for arson damage, the team must rebuild and face a true test of their physical and mental strength. The film follows a diverse cast of characters, including the Dettman Twins, John Fisher, and Connor Chadwick, as they navigate the challenges of adolescence and move towards manhood.
