A young boy washes up on a South Pacific island in a canoe and is initially welcomed as a gift from the gods. As he grows, he faces hardships and is eventually banished to live with a poor family, including Mahana, who is considered unattractive. Despite this, Tama develops feelings for Mahana and vows to return for her one day. He eventually becomes a successful trader and dreams of fulfilling his promise to Mahana.
