A former head of British secret service, Philip Kimberly, defects to the Soviet Union, but is later instructed to return to the West to retrieve crucial documents. After undergoing plastic surgery, he infiltrates the West and completes his mission. However, instead of returning to the East and risking assassination, Kimberly decides to play both the KGB and MI6 against each other, using the documents to manipulate the situation.
