The Hunger background

The Hunger

The Great Famine of Ireland, sparked by a potato blight and exacerbated by British policies, resulted in catastrophic hunger, illness, and a massive exodus of its inhabitants.

The 175th anniversary of the Great Irish Famine, a devastating humanitarian disaster that occurred from 1845 to 1852, left over one million people dead and another million and a quarter displaced worldwide. The tragedy had a profound impact on the poorest classes, including cottiers and landless laborers who relied heavily on potatoes for sustenance.
