Martha Beck, a bitter and overweight head nurse in a Mobile, Alabama hospital, joins a lonely hearts club after being signed up by her best friend Bunny. She meets Ray Fernandez, a suave Spanish immigrant, through the club and falls in love. However, Ray is a con man who seduces and bilks lonely women of their money. Martha decides to join him on his cons, but their differences in style and her jealousy over Ray's infidelity threaten to be their downfall.
