Sunshine Hotel background

Sunshine Hotel

A glimpse into the last remaining men-only flophouse on New York City's notorious Bowery, a notorious area plagued by high crime rates.

For centuries, the Bowery has been a gritty and vital artery of New York City, contrasting with Broadway's theaters and Fifth Avenue's mansions. Once a hub of nickel museums, burlesque shows, and rowdy entertainment, it became America's most famous "skid row" by the early 20th century, lined with flop houses, missions, and bars. Today, only a few of the old flophouses remain, remnants of a bygone era. The Sunshine Hotel is one of them, where nothing has changed in over 70 years.
