In early-2000s Salt Lake City, a lonely 40-year-old Asian-American criminal named Denny, who lives with his mom and commits petty crimes, signs up for a penpal service. He meets Tess, a criminal with a gambling addict boyfriend, Maury, who scam people through a penpal scheme. When Tess and Maury fall into debt, they target Denny, but upon arrival, they discover others are also being deceitful.
