In 19th century Spain, a young sergeant named Don José falls for a beautiful gypsy girl named Conchita who works in a military fort. When Conchita gets into a fight and tries to stab another woman, she's arrested and entrusted to Don José, who must escort her to the police station. However, Conchita escapes and Don José is demoted and forced to pull extra duty.
