In the early 20th century, a young couple, Gertrud and Ingmar, are deeply in love. When Ingmar leaves for the winter, a religious movement sweeps through the area, and Gertrud becomes enamored with its teachings. A charismatic priest convinces her to join him in emigrating to Palestine, along with Ingmar's sister.
