On the 19th century Schliersee lake, notorious poacher Brandner Kaspar is terrorizing the area, evading capture by Mayor Kugler and his gendarmes. After being grazed by a bullet, Kaspar is wounded in his hut, seemingly at the mercy of Death, who appears as a pale, black-robed creature. However, Kaspar cheats Death into granting him 20 more years of life through a game of cards. As Death faces bureaucratic consequences, Kaspar enjoys his extended life, but it ultimately becomes a curse when his granddaughter Nannerl dies in a hunting accident. Death then grants Kaspar a glimpse into paradise, but his numerous sins condemn him to purgatory. Unexpectedly, Kaspar receives divine help.
