A plan unfolds as the Sheriff and Sorrenson disguise Whitlock as the infamous outlaw, the Hawk, who has escaped from prison, to infiltrate his gang and retrieve stolen bonds.

The notorious outlaw The Hawk breaks out of prison and returns to Deadwood, where he's believed to have hidden $200,000 in stolen mail money. Meanwhile, Butch Cassidy and his gang prepare to rob a stagecoach, but it's foiled by Tom Whitlock, a passenger who's mistaken for The Hawk. As the story unfolds, Tom teams up with Butch and his gang, it but's revealed that Tom is actually a postal inspector, and he's been using his cover to track down the stolen loot.
