A con artist couple, Takeo and Takeko, travel Japan with their two sons, using a scam where Takeko pretends to be hit by vehicles and Takeo negotiates with the driver for a cash settlement. However, their scheme takes a toll on their dysfunctional family, including physical and emotional abuse, and the children's innocence. As the family's problems escalate, Takeo and Takeko's son, Toshio, begins to question the morality of their actions and considers running away.
